The Oregon Friendly Driver course is a free, vital resource designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate Oregon roads safely and respectfully. What YOu will learn:

Understand the unique needs and challenges faced by people walking, people biking, people with disabilities, and those using electric mobility devices.

Learn how Oregon laws apply to people on bikes and other vulnerable road users, ensuring you’re compliant and informed.

Gain a deeper understanding of road design and how it impacts different users.

Learn to identify and avoid common crash situations like “right hooks,” “left crosses,” and “dooring” incidents while driving around people on bikes.

Master strategies for hazard perception, risk assessment, and safe road navigation with people on foot, bike, people with disabilities, and electric mobility users.

What does the course cover?

We offer free in-person classes, webinars, and an online course, the Oregon Friendly Driver course aims to educate drivers about best practices, laws, and techniques for safer road network navigation. Our goal is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities on Oregon roads, ultimately making the transportation system safer and more inclusive for everyone.

Understanding Crash Dynamics:

Exploring the human factors behind crashes, moving away from the term "accident." Analyzing common crash causes, particularly those involving bicycles and cars, with updated statistics.

Defining "Friendly" Road Behavior:

Clarifying what constitutes courteous and safe interactions with all road users.

Infrastructure Awareness:

Gaining insights into the history of traffic engineering and its impact on road design. Understanding the infrastructure designed for pedestrians and cyclists.

Legal Responsibilities and Safe Practices:

Learning the application of vehicle laws to bicycles and understanding equipment requirements. Mastering safe passing techniques, avoiding "dooring" incidents, and using proper hand signals. Understanding Stop as Yield.
